About Shogo

Built on one idea: books that are current every day.

Shogo has been automating the handoff from sales systems to accounting systems since 2013 — independent, founder-owned, and focused on getting that handoff right.

Every morning, someone has to get yesterday's data into the books. They export the totals from the sales system, key them into the accounting system, and then track down whatever doesn't add up. For one location, that routine eats hours every week. For dozens of locations, the same routine is a full-time job. We built Shogo so nobody has to enter daily sales by hand.

The founders

Shogo was founded by two people who had each spent their careers on both sides of financial data: producing the numbers, and building the systems that produce them.

Bryan L. Thomas

Co-Founder & CEO

Bryan spent the first decade of his career in corporate finance at GE and GE Capital, working across corporate treasury, FP&A, and shared services (payroll for tens of thousands of employees and billions of dollars a year in accounts payable). He wasn't only a user of the systems behind that work; he actively managed them as products. He then spent nearly two decades in Japan and China leading the design and development of treasury software for multinational companies, including large-scale integrations connecting their ERP systems, cash and treasury operations, and banks.

Mike Sickler

Co-Founder & CTO

Mike spent his career building finance software for multinational companies, including a stretch on Bryan's team in Asia, where he established its development operation in China. After his time in Asia, he became acting CFO of his family's business, a franchisee of several food service concepts, which is where the problem Shogo solves first landed on his desk. He has closed those books himself — an unusual line on a CTO's résumé, and the reason Shogo's postings make sense to both the operator and the accountant.

Why we started

The name comes from the Japanese 照合 (shōgō): to collate, checking one record against another until everything lines up. The founders spent years building treasury systems for multinationals that matched every transaction to the penny, every day. Shogo was built to bring that same daily, to-the-penny matching to restaurants, retailers, and hotels, whose books have fewer zeros than a multinational's but need to be just as accurate.

The spark was personal. When Mike took over the books for his family's business, he found the process every operator knows: sales pulled from the point of sale and keyed into QuickBooks by hand, day after day, with the numbers rarely tying out the first time. Having spent his career building integrations for multinationals, he knew how that data should flow, and that no off-the-shelf software did the job well. Shogo started as his fix for that problem.

He wasn't alone. Cloud point of sale systems and cloud accounting systems had both arrived, but very little connected them well. Every operator was solving the same problem privately: a spreadsheet, a nightly export, a bookkeeper doing rote entry, or some combination held together by the one person who understood how it all worked. The data existed in one system and was needed in another, and the gap was being closed by hand.

That gap turned out to be much harder to close than it looked. Point of sale systems don't agree on what a day is, when it closes, or how a comp differs from a discount. Closing that gap well means absorbing those differences so the operator never has to think about them.

Integration is the product, not an add-on

Plenty of software connects your point of sale to your books as a secondary feature. At Shogo, integration comes first. Accounting integration is the core of the company: where it started, where the expertise runs deepest, and where the engineering is focused.

That focus is why Shogo supports 95 point of sale, property management, and eCommerce systems, from the most widely used platforms to systems built for a single industry.

How we've grown

  1. 2013Shogo starts with about 10 locations, posting Micros sales into QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. 2014Shogo adds QuickBooks Online and Xero, and cost of goods sold starts posting alongside sales.
  3. 2015The first eCommerce integration, Shopify, brings online sales into the same daily posting.
  4. 2016–20Point of sale and eCommerce integrations expand steadily. Purchase orders begin syncing to the accounting system, sales can post as itemized invoices, and Shogo welcomes new kinds of businesses and its first customers outside North America.
  5. 2021Shogo adds Oracle NetSuite and Sage Intacct, bringing it to four accounting systems.
  6. 2022Operating statistics and deeper segmentation, by daypart and revenue center, arrive on Oracle NetSuite and Sage Intacct.
  7. 2023The first property management system integration brings hotels and resorts on board, accounts receivable joins the daily posting, and Shogo earns its SOC 2 Type II attestation.
  8. 2024–26Shogo invests in everything around the daily posting: better reports, an online knowledge base, in-app help and answers, and clearer notifications when something needs attention.
  9. Today95 point of sale, property management, and eCommerce integrations, four accounting systems, and customers in all 50 states, every Canadian province, and six continents.
  10. NextConnecting more of the systems a business runs on, so more of each day's numbers reach the books automatically.
Shogo customer locations today.

Shogo works with restaurants and restaurant groups, hotels and resorts, multi-location retail, golf and ski operations, franchisees and franchisors, and hybrid businesses running a storefront alongside eCommerce. Some are a single owner-operator with one location and a bookkeeper. Others are enterprise groups closing the books on hundreds of locations every month with a finance team that needs the same posting to arrive the same way every day.

Shogo's customers also use very different accounting systems. Whatever you post to — Oracle NetSuite, QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or Xero — the floor is identical: a clean, automated, balanced daily posting, without manual entry. On Oracle NetSuite and Sage Intacct the ceiling is higher, because those platforms offer more ways to break down the numbers, and Shogo posts into them natively.
